Arshavin is certainly the best Russian player in the current era. Arshavin bloomed as a fine player in his late twenties. He has nice first touch and can play in various attacking positions as he has a good eye on goal. Arshavin is good at linking up with midfielders and strikers. He helped Russia to reach the semi-final of Euro 2008.Arshavin was instrumental in Zenit St.Petersburg’s Russian Premier League aswell as UEFA cup triumph. Arshavin is the current captain of Russia.
Arshavin learned the basics of football from the Smena Football Academy. He played for Zenit St Petersburg’s second-string side during 1999/2000 season. He made it to the senior side of the Zenit St.Petersburg in 2000.He first played for Zenit in an Intertoto cup match against Bradford city. In 2001 season, he helped Zenit to finish third place in Russian premier league. In 2002, he helped Zenit to reach the final of Russian cup. In 2003, Arshavin helped Zenit to finish second in the Russian Premier League and lift the Russian Premier League cup. In 2005, he helped Zenit to reach semi-final of Russian cup. Arshavin helped Zenit to lift UEFA cup and UEFA Super cup, in 2008. Arshavin won the Russian footballer of the year award in 2006. He was the top assist provider in 2007 RPL and 2007/2008 UEFA Cup. Arshavin played 312 matches for Zenit scoring 71 goals and provided 109 assists.
In 2009 January, Arsenal bought Arshavin for 14 million pounds and add-ons. His first match for Arsenal was against Sunderland. His first goal for Arsenal was against Blackburn Rovers. Arshavin scored four goals in a thrilling EPL match against Liverpool that finished 4-4 draw. He won the April’s premier league player of the month 2009.Even though Arshavin played only the second half of the season he made impact for Arsenal .He finished second in Arsenal’s player of the year Award. Arshavin scored six goals in 15 appearances for Arsenal, in his first season.
In 2002, Arshavin made his International debut with Russian national team while playing against Belarus. His first goal was against Romania in 2003. He helped Russia to qualify for the 2008 Euro. He missed the first two matches in Euro 2008 following suspension. He came back to help Russia to enter the quarterfinal with a goal and an assist in the last group match against Sweden. He scored a goal and provided an assist to help Russia to reach the Semi-final. They outsmarted the tournament favourites Holland in the quarterfinal. Arshavin became the captain of Russia in 2009.Arshavin is leading Russia in the qualifying matches for 2010 world in South Africa. Arshavin scored 15 goals for Russia in 45 matches.
