Eidur Gudjohnsen is the greatest footballer to emerge from Iceland. He proved his mettle in tough European leagues with top clubs. Gudjohnsen’s work rate and versatility allows him to be effective as a striker or attacking midfielder. Gudjohnsen is good in air and has quick footwork. He has amazing passing range, good ball control, first touch, aswell as great vision. He is the all-time top scorer of Iceland.

Gudjohnsen started his professional football career with Urvalsdeild club Valur Reykjavik, in 1994.He played 17 matches for them and scored seven goals. He joined Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven in 1995.Though, PSV won Dutch cup, Dutch super cup, and Dutch Eredivise during his stint with them, injuries kept away from the action, for most part. He scored three goals in 13 matches.

Gudjohnsen moved back to Iceland after PSV released him in 1997. He joined KR Reykjavik, in 1998.KR won VISA-bikar cup in 1998.Gudjohnsen played six matches for them. Turn around in his career happened, when he joined English first division club Bolton wanderers after a trail with them, in 1998.He made his debut for Bolton while playing against Birmingham in 1998.He scored 5 goals in 14 matches to help Bolton to qualify for the Play off final. However, they lost to Watford by 2-0. In 1999/2000 season, Gudjohnsen was instrumental in Bolton’s march towards semi-finals of FA cup, League cup aswell as Playoffs for promotion. He scored 21 goals during that season.

1n 2000, English Premier League club Chelsea signed him Gudjohnsen in a transfer deal worth 4 million. Gudjohnsen won the FA community shield straightaway, in 2000.In his first season he scored 13 goals. During 2001/2002 season, he scored 23 goals and played a role in Chelsea’s runner up finish in FA cup. Due to Gudjohnsen’s versatility, Manager Mourinho deployed him at various positions in midfield, after the arrival of high profile strikers at Chelsea. Gudjohnsen helped Chelsea to win FA Premier League, FA cup in 2005.He helped them to retain the Premier league in 2006.He won FA community Shield twice, and Football League cup once with Chelsea. Gudjohnsen scored 104 goals and provided 60 assists for Chelsea, in 333 matches.

He moved to Spain and joined Barcelona, for 12 million Euros, in 2006.He scored on his La Liga debut to help Chelsea to beat Celto Vigo 3-2.He helped Barcelona to reach the final of FIFA Club world cup, in 2006.He won Spanish super cup, in 2006. Gudjohnsen was part of Barcelona squad, which won Spanish la liga, Copa del Rey aswell as UEFA Champions league in 2009. Gudjohnsen is more of an impact player these days due to the presence of top players. He has scored 19 goals in 72 appearances for Barcelona.

Gudjohnsen made his debut for Iceland while playing against Estonia amazingly replacing his father as a substitute, in 1996.Gudjohnsen has scored 23 goals for Iceland in 59 matches. He is certainly a legend in Iceland.
