Eusebio is the greatest of all to don the colours of Portugal. Eusebio is the player who scored maximum number of goals for Portugal, 41 of them, in international matches. Eusebio won the 1965 European footballer of the year award for his outstanding performances. He was the top goal scorer of 1966 worldcup held in England. Eusebio was synonymous his speed and powerful shots. Portugal Football federation selected him as their golden player of the last 50 years in 2003.Eusebio had a phenomenal record of being the leading scorer in Portuguese league, from the year 1963 to 1973 as a Benfica player.

Eusebio da Silva Ferrira was born on 25th January 1942 at Lourenco Marques in Mozambique. Also known as “The Black pearl,” young Eusebio started his football career with Sporting Lourenco Marques in 1957.Benfica’s coach Bela Guttmann came to know about Eusebio through Sao Paolo coach at a hair salon located in Lisbon. He moved to Benfica club in Portugal in 1960 for a nominal transfer fee of 7,500 pounds. He won Portuguese championship in 1961 with Benfica. They ended up as runner up in world club cup. Eusebio scored goals to lead Benfica to 1962 European cup. Benfica won it 5-2 against the mighty Real Madrid. He won eleven Portuguese league titles with Benfica. Eusebio was a part of Benfica’s amazing glory years. Benfica were runner up in European Cup during 1963, 1965 as well as 1968.Eusebio was the first ever to win the European golden boot and he won it in 1968 as well as 1973.He won five Portuguese cups while playing for Benfica. He scored staggering 727 goals in just 715 matches for Benfica, which is really an amazing in any level. After leaving Benfica, he played for S.C. Beira Mar as well as Uniao de Tomar in Portuguese first division and second division respectively. He was part of NASL revolution. Portugal featured in a world cup for the first time in 1966.He slotted in nine goals, though Portugal’s great run ended in semi final. He scored 41 goals for Portugal and was their leading scorer until Pauleta broke the record.
