Franz Beckenbauer is simply a gem of German football as he gave immense contribution as player, coach, manager, and administrator. He is popular as “Der Kaiser” in Germany. He is one of the all time greats in not just German but also in world football. Though he started his career as a midfielder, he went on to become a defensive stalwart. He has an amazing feat of winning world cup as both a player and manager in 1974 and 1990 respectively. He immortalised the sweeper or libero role in defence. He while playing for Bayern Munich He won Ballon d ‘Or twice in 1972 and 1976.He was the German footballer of the year during 1966, 1968, 1974 and 1976.

Franz Beckenbauer was born on September 11 in the year 1945 in Munich. He grew up in the district of Giesing. At the age of eight, he joined SC Munich ’06 even though his father was sceptical about him playing football. At the age of 14, he joined Bayern Munich’s youth team. He made debut for Bayern Munich in June 1964 in Regionalliga. Bayern Munich got promotion to the newly formed Bundesliga in 1965.Beckenbaur won German cup with Bayern Munich in 1966 and 1967. Bayern went on to win European cup winners’ cup in 1967.Beckenbaur was appointed as captain during 1968/1969 season and he ended the season with first league glory for Munich. He won four league titles with Bayern Munich. Another feather in his cap is leading Bayern Munich to three consecutive European cups from 1972 to 1974.He won intercontinental cup with Bayern Munich in 1976.He left Bayern Munich ending 13 years association to join New York Cosmos in 1977.He played four seasons for New York Cosmos in North American Pro League. He played for Hamburg in Germany between 1980 and 1982, before winding up his playing career with New York Cosmos after 1983 season. He won three NASL championships with New York cosmos and two Trans-Atlantic cups. While playing for Hamburg he won his final Bundesliga title in 1981/1982.

Beckenbauer made debut for West Germany on September 1965. He played in 1966 world cup held in England. West Germany lost to host England 2-4 after an impressive run throughout the competition. Beckenbauer scored four goals and was third highest goal scorer in that world cup, which is truly a great accomplishment for a defender.

In 1970 world cup, West Germany made it to the semi-finals but lost out to Italy in a thriller of a match. Beckenbauer he got injury from a rash challenge from an Italian player. He showed determination as he played on with a dislocated arm as West Germany used their quota of substitutions. They lost 3-4 at the end of extra time. They finished the tournament as third placed team. In 1971, he became the captain of West Germany. Beckenbauer led West Germany to European championship glory in 1972 after defeating Soviet Union. In 1974, West Germany hosted the world cup and Beckenbauer led the hosts to world cup victory with a 2-1 victory over Holland. He played 103 times for West Germany and scored 14 goals. 

He became the manager of Germany after returning from New York Cosmos. He managed the team during 1986 world cup. Germans lost to Argentina in final. However, Beckenbauer took West Germany to the final of 1990 world cup to finish as winners defeating Argentina. Beckenbauer managed Olympique Marseille during 1990-1991 to a French championship victory. He managed Bayern Munich during parts of 1993/1994 as well as during April to June 1996 fetching them Bundesliga title and UEFA Cup. He became the president of Bayern Munich in 1994.He became advisory board chairman in 2002 after Bayern Munich became a limited company. He was in forefront in the quest for Germany’s bid to host 2006 world cup. He was the chairman of the 2006 world cup organizational committee, which organised the world cup. He has played a big role in Bayern Munich’s success as a player, manager, and official .He is still with the club.

Beckenbauer married three times and has five children. Brigitte Beckenbauer 1966-1990, Sybille Beckenbauer 1990-2004 is his ex wives. Heidi Burmester is his current wife. Thomas, Stefan, Michael, Noel, and Francessca are his children.
