Luis Figo is one of the greatest footballers to emerge from Portugal. He is one among the golden generation of Portuguese football. Figo won the European footballer of the year and FIFA World Player of the year in 2000 and 2001 respectively. Figo was a playmaker with amazing dribbling abilities and quickness.

Figo honed up his football skills while being a part of Youth systems of Uniao de Pastilhas and Sporting CP. Figo made it to the senior side of Sporting CP, in 1989.Figo established himself as a starter in Sporting CP first eleven during 1991/1992 season. Figo won the Portuguese golden ball in 1994. In 1994/1995 season, Figo scored 10 goals. He helped Sporting CP to win Portuguese cup aswell as Super Cup Candido de Oliveira, in 1995.Figo scored 20 goals for Sporting CP in 169 appearances.

In 1995,Figo moved to Spain and joined Spanish giants Barcelona on a transfer deal worth 2.25 million pounds. Figo’s first silverware with Barcelona was Joan Gamper Trophy in 1996.He helped Barcelona to win it in 1997,1998 aswell as 1999.Figo became a fans favourite with his performances for Barcelona. He helped Barcelona to win UEFA Cup winners cup and UEFA Super cup, in 1997.Figo won Copa del Rey with Barcelona in 1997 and 1998.Figo played a role in Barcelona’s two consecutive La liga titles in 1998 and 1999.He won Spanish super cup and Copa Catalunya with Barcelona in 1996 and 2000 respectively. Figo scored 47 goals for Barcelona in 249 appearances.

Figo shocked Barcelona fans with his decision to join bitter rivals Real Madrid ,in 2000.He joined Real Madrid to be a galactico in a then world record transfer deal worth 37 million pounds. Figo helped Real Madrid to win Spanish La Liga in 2001 and 2003.He helped them to win UEFA Champions’ league, UEFA Super cup aswell as Intercontinental cup in 2002.Figo won Spanish Super cup with Real Madrid in 2001 and 2003. Figo had to endure tough reaction from Barcelona fans whenever he visited Nou camp in a Real Madrid Jersey. Figo scored 57 goals for Real Madrid in 239 matches. Figo was runner up

In 2005,Figo moved to Italy and joined Internazionale as a free agent. Figo was part of Internazionale squad, which won four consecutive Italian Serie A titles, between 2006 and 2009. In last two campaigns, he played more of bit part role. He helped Internazionale to win Coppa Italia in 2006.He won Italian Super cup in 2005,2006 and 2008.Figo scored 10 goals in 132 matches for Internazionale. He quit club football in 2009.

Figo led the Portuguese youth team to success at 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship. In 1991,Figo made his senior debut for Portugal while playing against Luxembourg. He was integral part of Portugal team which participated in Euro 2000 and Euro 2004.In 2000 Euro, Portugal finished 3rd.He captained Portugal in numerous matches. He led the Portugal to a runner up finish at 2004 Euro. He participated in two world cups held in 2002 and 2006.Figo led Portugal to the last four of the 2006 world cup. Portugal lost to France in the semi final. Figo won the Portuguese footballer of the year in 1995,1996,1997,1999 and 2000.Figo quit the International football after the 2006 world cup. He scored 32 goals in 127.Figo is there in the top hundred living footballers list published by FIFA in 2004.Figo is certainly one among the all time best footballers.
