Paolo Maldini is one of the best defenders to play for AC Milan and Italy. Another distinction about Maldini is that during his two-decade-old career, he played only for AC Milan. Paulo Maldini was a very technical player, who knew how to perfect the tackles and he had great pace for defender. He had the ability to play as both a left back as well as a centre back. Maldini was an inspirational captain for Milan for long time, and his longevity helped Milan to shore up their defence. Maldini holds the record of playing the most number of matches for Italy. Amazingly, Maldini scored the fastest goal in UEFA Champions league, while playing against Liverpool in 2005 final, with just 51 seconds on the clock. He holds the record of maximum number of appearances in Serie A. He won the 1994 world player of the year award of World Soccer Magazine, with a unique distinction of being the first defender to do so.

Paolo Maldini was born on 26th June 1968 at Milan. Adriana a well-known model is his wife. Daniel and Christian are his two sons. His son Christian is playing for Milan Youth team. He followed the footsteps of his father Cesare Maldini, who was a great player himself. He made his Serie A debut for AC Milan during the 1985/1986 season against Udinese at an age of just 16.Maldini won his first Scudetto during the 1987/1988 season. He won Serie A during 1992, 1993, 1994,1996,1999,2004 seasons as well. He won one Copa Italia, five super Coppa Italiana five times, UEFA Champions league five times and UEFA Super cup five times. He won World club championship with Milan in 2007.He made it to the UEFA team of the year in 2003 as well as 2005.He participated in eight UEFA Champions league finals. He played his 1000th match for Milan, against Parma, while he appeared as a substitute. Maldini played his match as a Milan player during the match against Roma, which they lost 3-2.AC Milan, retired the No3 shirt honouring the contributions of Paolo Maldini for the club.

He made his international debut, while playing for Italian under-21 team, in 1986.He made his senior international debut, while playing against Yugoslavia in 1988.He played major part of his international career as Captain.He played in 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002-world cup. In 1990 world cup, Italy reached the semi finals, but lost out to Argentina via penalty shootout. He led the Italian team as captain during 1994 world cup. Italy lost out to Brazil in the final via penalty shootout. FIFA named Maldini in team of 1994 world cup. He played in 1988, 1996, and 2000 euro cup competitions for Italy. In 2000, Italy lost out to France in the final. He retired from international football after Italy’s exit from the 2002 world cup. He scored seven international goals for Italy. There were requests from the public to have him playing the 2004-euro cup, but he refused.
