Torsten Frings is one of the top German midfielders in this era. He is currently with German Bundesliga team Werder Bremen. Frings is a versatile box-to-box midfielder with tremendous shooting capabilities. Frings is good at tackling and he can change the course of the ball from defense to attack quickly.
Torsten Frings was born at Wurselen in Germany on 22nd November 1976. He started his football journey with youth side of Rot-Weiß Alsdorf in 1982 at the age of 6.He was with them until 1988.He joined Rhenania Alsdorf in 1988.In 1990, Frings joined the youth side of Alemmania Aachen a third division club in Germany. In 1994, Aachen gave him promotion to their senior side.He played 56 league matches for Aachen and scored 13 goals.
In 1996, Frings left Aachen and joined German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen. In his first season, he played 15 matches. He established himself in the team during 1997/1998 season. Frings helped Werder Bremen to lift DFB Pokal in 1999.Frings played in UEFA champions’ league matches as well for Werder Bremen during his stint with them. He scored 18 goals for Werder Bremen in 173 matches, during his first stint with them.
In 2002, Borussia Dortmund signed him on a transfer deal worth 10 million Euros. During 2003/2004 season, he played as a playmaker for Borussia Dortmund. Frings played 63 matches for Dortmund and scored 12 goals. In 2004, German giants Bayern Munich signed him up. He won DFB Ligapokal in 2004 with Bayern Munich. He helped Munich to lift the Bundesliga title as well as DFB Pokal in 2005.However, as he was not playing in his preferred position he preferred to move back to his old club Werder Bremen, in 2005.He scored five goals in 45 appearances for Bayern Munich. He helped Werder Bremen to reach the knock out stages of UEFA champions’ league in that season. He won DFB-Ligapokal with Werder Bremen in 2006.Even though Frings did not play much during 2007/2008 season, Bremen ended up as Bundesliga runner-up. Frings helped Bremen to enter the final of UEFA Cup in 2009.He helped Bremen to lift DFB-Pokal in 2009.Frings has played 146 matches for Bremen during his second stint.
Frings has represented German Under-21 team for six matches, before making debut for German senior side, in 2001.Frings has represented Germany at 2002 as well as 2006 world cup. Frings helped Germany to finish as the runner-up during 2002 world cup, as they lost the final to Brazil. In 2005, he helped Germany to finish third in FIFA confederations’ cup. In 2006, he helped Germany to enter the semi-final of FIFA world cup held in Germany. Frings scored a stunning 30-yarder goal against Ecuador during that world cup. However, he missed out the match due to suspension. Germany finished as the third placed team. Frings played in UEFA Euro 2008 and helped Germany to finish runner-up. Frings is hoping to feature in 2010 world cup for Germany. Frings has played 102 matches for Germany and scored nine goals.
